After careful planning with attention to design and comfort, Su Soi Hotel and Restaurant was built and opened its doors in 2007, owned and managed by the Meli family. Set in the tranquil countryside of Cabras, outside Oristano, it is a haven for the traveler seeking rest or for the energetic tourist seeking the convenience of location from which to make daily excursions to the nearby sights – the ancient Phoenician ruins at Tharros, the picturesque town of Oristano with its museums and churches, or the nature reserves where migrating birds gather. An excellent restaurant and ten spacious, pleasing rooms offer a perfect spot for relaxing and savoring Sardinian hospitality and Franca and her son, Stefano, give it their best - a generous continental breakfast to start one’s day, a garden with a pool for simply lounging, a leisurely lunch or dinner in their restaurant.
We dined “at home” at Su Soi our second evening, sampling their seafood menu of dishes prepared in the local tradition. An endless parade of fish-based creations arrived at our table – octopus salad, marinated grey mullet, burrida in tomato sauce, fregola di mare, the traditional hand-made pasta the size of small beads, coated in a seafood sauce, a mixed grill of fish… The restaurant is open to the public and is a favorite place for local families to celebrate the big and small occasions of their lives – weddings, baptisms, birthdays. It is easy to see why they come – Su Soi is synonymous with excellent food in a setting that is warm and unpretentious. Su Soi is Sardinian dialect for “the sun.” Our visit took place on cloudy, rain-filled days, but their hospitality was as warm and radiant as sunshine.
