A visit to Naples would not be complete without spending time in the characteristic quarter of Santa Lucia, the little port immortalized in the Neapolitan song by the same name. One should experience Old Napoli by the Sea. A stay at the Grand Hotel Santa Lucia gives visitors a chance to do just that. Ours was truly a room with a view. Beneath our balcony, Castel dell’Ovo dominated the little harbour of Santa Lucia where colourful boats were moored. To our left, Mt. Vesuvius was visible; straight ahead in the distance was Capri, while to our right we had a wonderful view the villa-studded cliffs of Posilipo. This year, the hotel celebrates a century of hospitality. It is a tranquil haven, boasting simple elegance and comfortable rooms, many of which offer balconies overlooking the sea. It is within easy walking distance of many sights, including the Teatro San Carlo, the Galleria and the bustling shopping district around Via Toledo. Restaurants are plentiful in the area and the long-established trattorie and cafés on the harbour beckon you to their tables at water’s edge. The Santa Lucia restaurant brings the flavours of the land and the sea of Naples right to her tables. A meal prepared by their chef, Antonio Scarpati, is worth reserving a table for and will satisfy in every way.
